A group of Lincoln University students have ‘opened their doors’ to the world of television, with one of their songs playing in an episode of the popular BBC spy drama Killing Eve. Mosaics, a British rock band formed in late 2017, had their song “Weekend In Paris” played on episode three of season four of Killing Eve, which recently aired on BBC iPlayer.

Owen Paul is the band’s lead singer and songwriter and said it was an incredibly exciting experience. He said: “We were alerted that he would be in there [Killing Eve] a few months ago and everything has been a bit of a whirlwind since. It’s an incredibly exciting thing for us.

“It’s a good teaser for the new single and it’s a huge TV program and a completely new experience for us, it’s kind of surreal.” Owen said the song plays in the background of a bar in a scene where Sandra Oh, who plays British intelligence investigator Eve, is in a pub extracting new information.

Owen said the band also only recently signed their first publishing deal with Xacutti Music after being independent for several years, which was already a milestone for the band. He said: “Our publisher is pretty well connected in the film and television industry, so one thing led to another.”

He added that the song matched the scene of Killing Eve quite well and was therefore chosen by the director. He said: “The world of London TV is incredibly alien to us, so suddenly signing a publishing deal and having a song we’re incredibly proud of on such a massive TV program is quite humbling.

“It attracts the right kind of buzz and the right kind of interested people. It opens up some really positive doors for us.”

There are four members in the band including Owen. Stu Smith is lead guitarist and co-writes songs with Owen, George Moore is bassist and James Turner is drummer. The band play gigs all over Lincoln and the Midlands and want to be “as universal as possible” in the types of music they make.

Owen said: “I don’t think there were a lot of bands that came out of Lincoln, so it was a really great place. [to start] and there’s a great musical community there and in Boston.”

An official release date for “Weekend In Paris” has yet to be decided, Owen said the band are waiting for the right time. On Saturday April 16, Mosaics will play a concert in Lincoln for the first time in two years at The Scene to promote their new single.
