If there’s one thing the internet loves, it’s nostalgia, which is why it seems a third post on your Facebook feed is about the 25 toys you forgot to play with 15 years ago. Yet there’s another often-forgotten part of ’90s and early ’00s culture that will live on forever in us: the boys, the bands, and the songs they sang to win our hearts.
It’s all quite melodramatic, because these were guys who were in tune with their emotions (get it?) In retrospect, it’s all 20/20, and the greatness these boys brought to the screen is just enough for us remember that before we were all headed to One Direction, seas of teenagers were split between NSync, the Backstreet Boys and all the other glorious marvels that graced our boomboxes at the time.
When Fall Out Boy and Demi Lovato released their new music video for “Irresistible,” we were immediately reminded of its origin story: NSync’s “It’s Gonna Be Me.” And two of NSync’s OG members even appeared in the clip! But it reminded us of the other great music videos we’ve seen over the years, during the height of the boy band glory days. Here, 12 others that you may have forgotten:
1. “It Happens Every Time” by Dream Street
If you don’t remember Dream Street, let us refresh your memory: it was the song that played on every other commercial break on Disney Channel and then haunted you for the next 3 years. It was a bit of a one-album wonder, but let’s not forget that Jesse McCartney came through as the Beyoncé of the band, so it’s all good that we finally get “Beautiful Soul.”
2. Larger Than Life” by the Backstreet Boys
“Larger Than Life” is a powerful anthem, as were so many Backstreet tracks. Still, we may have been too quick to overlook the accompanying video and all the dancing CGI alien robots.
3. “Drowning (The Wet Version)” by the Backstreet Boys
