Westlife’s Shane Filan says he can see Ed Sheeran form a boy band one day.
The ‘Shape of You’ hitmaker is a huge fan of boy bands and has written tracks for Westlife, One Direction and Boyzone.
And the “You Raise Me Up” singer says the 30-year-old Grammy winner has what it takes to put together a boy band and guide them to success.
The 42-year-old singer also thinks the flamboyant-haired pop star could have been in a boy band himself.
Shane told the Daily Star newspaper’s Wired column: “Ed is a big fan of pop music, especially boy bands, he’d probably like to be a part of that.
“When Ed was growing up, he told me he learned to play guitar on ‘Flying Without Wings’ and it was one of his party tunes when he was on the streets.
“He had rehearsed ‘Westlife’s Greatest Hits’.”
He continued, “He was growing up listening to us and listening to other bands and probably wouldn’t have been a solo artist 15 years ago because Ed Sheeran, the solo artist, might not have worked so well.
“But all the boy bands disappeared after that.”
Shane hailed Ed as “one of the best songwriters in the world” and a “true pop music fan”.
He added: “Now he works with a lot of these people and knows how to get the most out of vocal groups because he’s a real pop music fan and one of the best songwriters in the world.
“He’s such a good storyteller.”
The ‘Bad Habits’ hitmaker co-wrote a number of tracks for their 2019 album ‘Spectrum’, and the band insisted he was the ‘only’ man who ‘could get Westlife out of bed’.
Nicky Byrne – who rounds out the lineup with Mark Feehily and Kian Egan – said at the time: “When the opportunity arose last year to get together…who has a second bite of the cherry, you know? We never knew if the tour would just be a moment of nostalgia – you know, you say hello to the fans and then goodbye. We thought: “We would like to give more than that, and try to make a new album”, and that’s where Ed Sheeran, to be fair, got up. I think if there’s probably only one man who could get Westlife out of bed, it’s Ed Sheeran .
